Misappropriation of DOJ/OVW Grant funds by Lift3 Executive Director Claudia Humphrey.
SACRAMENTO — The executive director of Lift3 Support Group, Claudia Humphrey, pleaded not guilty Thursday to 16 federal criminal charges accusing her of embezzling more than $53,000 of federal grant money intended for local domestic violence victims and then trying to cover up the theft.
Humphrey and her criminal defense attorney, Randy Sue Pollack of Oakland, agreed to return to court Feb. 23 for scheduling future hearings.
Judge Deborah L. Barnes agreed with federal prosecutors that Humphrey, 60, could remain out of custody on her own recognizance.
The federal indictment handed down Nov. 4 by a grand jury accuses Humphrey of diverting grant funds from the Fairfield nonprofit organization 10 times between 2011 and 2013, including using a debit card to withdraw more than $1,100 while she was visiting Las Vegas in July 2013.
The indictment also accuses Humphrey of obstructing government auditors in 2014 and Department of Justice investigators in 2015 in an effort to conceal her alleged embezzlement, along with falsifying purchase documents, expense reports and time sheets.
If convicted of all charges, Humphrey could be sentenced to prison for the rest of her life in addition to being ordered to pay possible fines of at least $750,000.

It should be noted that this is the grant where, specifically, the Court requested funding to hire a Domestic Violence Project Attorney and Domestic Violence Project Case Coordinator.
If the Court acknowledges the need to address domestic violence, why then do the FAMILY LAW JUDGES routinely dismiss requests for protective orders and use the threat of removing the custodial time from mothers, to silence claims of abuse?
